The power and beauty of High Reliability.
High Reliability addresses some hard facts about the reality of working in complex, high-risk, and unpredictable environments.
If we can get over the getting over the hurdle of accepting the vulnerabilities in this type of work, we can begin to create a new future that takes better care of everyone.
The power comes from the fact that it springs from a humble acceptance about the nature of the elements that come together in high risk environments. We cannot change the natures of these elements, we can only discover them and adapt. The beauty of the perspective is that it focuses on things you can control no matter what happens each day: your intentions, your attention and your behavior.
You can make a difference even if your workplace hasn’t formally embraced the principles and practices as an institution. (Caution, you will not be able to fully engage until you have the culture and systems endorsed by leadership, but the mindset and many of the behaviors are, in fact, part of your professional responsibilities).
Because much of the High Reliability practices have been written about in either military, industrial, or doctoral level academic theory, at first it can seem foreign and confusing. However, this is just the language and context getting in the way.
I can guarantee that you already practice High Reliability thinking and acting in many areas of your life.
But… ironically you may not be as comfortable using these same behaviors at work, and there are valid reasons for that.
This is what we hope to change. Once we look at the perspectives, concepts, thinking and behaviors in a generic way, you will quickly recognize them as familiar and be able to see the way they could and should translate into your high-risk work.
