Founder, Be Highly Reliable

I love people. And, I love HRO! Matter of fact, I can’t stop telling people about HRO. Here’s why:

My life experiences as an ED nurse, Off-Shift Administrative/ Clinical Supervisor and patient advocate for family members set me searching for the answers to the following 2 questions: “How can it be that we are harming the very people we intend to help?” and “What do we have to do differently to achieve the outcomes we do intend?”

I started by becoming a legal nurse consultant. But, I quickly realized I wanted to work on figuring out how to prevent or stop harm in real-time. Next, I was mentored by an expert witness for healthcare corporate liability who has a strong interest in safety. He asked me to create a database from the 353 cases he had been involved in over 35 years, knowing there were valuable insights there. The experience was life-changing. There were patterns in the cases that repeated over and over. Yes, there were system failures, but there were clear dynamics that had to do with people. However, instead of seeing them as human failures, I saw the potential that people have to create safety! Next, I looked at how other industries deal with safety in complex high-risk work and I stumbled across HRO. I quickly realized that HRO both addresses both the challenges people face in complex, dynamic work and acknowledges the power humans possess to insure safe successful outcomes. WOW! I reached out to HRO experts from other industries and they took me in!

Now I’m excited to bridge back into healthcare to share the wisdom of people in other industries.

Director of Operations, Be Highly Reliable

Raised working in a family construction business I learned what it takes to be successful: hard work, dedication, motivation and a good team behind you.

Even though most of my work has been with my hands, I love tackling business operation problems and organizing people (which is a big part of this job if you catch my drift). I met Laurin in the horse world. However, when I heard what she did for work and found out she was looking for someone to join her team, I knew that the vision of bhr was something I could totally get behind. Working with horses includes lots of ambiguity and unexpected events so I instinctively already saw the value of HRO. I’m really excited to see the impact bringing HRO into healthcare can make, and I am thrilled to be a part of it. On weekends at horse shows sorting cows! I used all kinds of HRO attitudes and actions rescuing this horse.

Safety Science Application Expert, Be Highly Reliable

I almost lost my Mother due to a missed diagnosis of endocarditis after dental work. This was followed by a close call for unnecessary surgery to remove her artificial knee. Sitting by her bedside, I noticed that simple practices that support diagnosis and care for difficult cases were missing.

I’m an expert practitioner in Highly Reliable Organizing (HRO) and Resilience Engineering (RE), having studied and practiced both for more than 10 years. I’ve worked with companies such as NASA, Los Alamos National Labs, Siemens, Calpine, and ThyssenKrupp to increase reliability and resilience. My most recent role was Director of Human Performance at Calpine Corp (owner / operator of 80+ electric utility power plants), where I led implementing human performance, incorporating HRO and RE theories. I’m a mechanical engineer with a graduate certificate in Cognitive Science.
